Building, Operating and Transferring the Northern Marmara Highway (Including the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge) Project’s Kınalı–Odayeri Section (Including Access Roads) According to the Build-Operate-Transfer Model

The Northern Marmara Highway Project will increase the service quality in transportation by separating the regional traffic created by the growing urbanization and industrialization in the direction of East–West in the Northern Marmara Region, and the intercity and international traffic that cross the region. The Kınalı–Odayeri section, which is among the European-side sections that will connect Istanbul Airport to the city center, starts from Kınalı on the provincial border between Tekirdağ and Istanbul. It then passes through the districts of Silivri and Çatalca in Istanbul and connects to the Yavuz Sultan Bridge and Access Roads Project at the Odayeri junction. Starting from Habibler Junction in Istanbul, it is also connected to the TEM Highway via the Hasdal Junction. It will connect to the Çanakkale 1915 Bridge (under construction) via the Kınalı–Malkara Motorway and integrate into the Northern Marmara Region transportation network. It will also create an uninterrupted transportation network by connecting to the Istanbul–Izmir Highway. The Northern Marmara Highway connects the European and Asian continents. Located in the Marmara Region, which has the highest road traffic in Turkey, the highway will provide an uninterrupted, safe and comfortable transit for national and international vehicles and transportation lines. It will also reduce the local traffic load of Istanbul by redirecting the heavy vehicle load away from Istanbul’s urban roads and existing Bosphorus bridges. The Kınalı–Odayeri section on the European side consists of three sections: Kınalı–Yassıören, Yassıören–Odayeri, and Habibler–Hasdal. The Kınalı–Odayeri (including the access roads) section has been designed with a main body length of 71 kilometers and an access road length of 37 kilometers. The construction of 148 kilometers (including the access roads and junction arms) of the Odayeri–Kurtköy section of the Northern Marmara Motorway Project, which also includes the Bosphorus passage, has been completed and put into service. Compared to the existing transportation infrastructure, the project is predicted to save 30 minutes for journeys on the Kınalı–Mahmutbey route in the European side, and an average of 45 minutes on journeys between Kurtköy–Akyazı on the Asian side.

The Nothern Highway, Kınalı-Odayeri section and linking roads have been opened to traffic as of March 2020, except for the last part within the scope of the project. The last part of the project, will
be put into use with all its lines in the first quarter of 2021.
